My Comment:
In answer to the question about how I know the words of Jesus reported in the Gospels are really His and not merely words put in His mouth by anonymous later writers, I appealed to this verse and its context.
Not everyone will be convinced by the evidence I furnished. It may take a certain sensitivity to how language and literature works to grasp the point.
Careful readers will sense an air of reality possessed by these Gospel accounts and realize the writers were recording history, not writing fiction. The Gospel writers wrote what they themselves heard and saw or recorded what living witnesses to the events told them they heard and saw.
Another avenue of proof is to consult the cross references I and many Bible scholars before me have noted and which I present in my Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:
